Bromleighs: A Tale of Craft, Character and Family

Following launch our new website, we wanted to take a moment to share our story – one that starts with a quirky idea, a family workshop and a deep love for beautifully crafted switches and sockets. So stay seated if you want to hear all about a little family business who have found fun in making light switches and sockets in a small workshop in South Wales!

Meet the Makers: Adele & Lauren

In 2017, our Dad announced that we were going into the switch and socket business and to be honest, it was a little out of left field! At the time Adele (our managing director) had spent some time working for a design lighting company, so it did sort of make sense. However, the true surprise, was that this little business required Adele to move her life from Bristol to Cornwall. So at the ripe age of 23 years old, she packed her bags and off she went to experience the Cornish lifestyle, the incredible amount of rain that Cornwall gets (something she wasn’t expecting) and immerse herself in the world of switches and sockets!

It wasn’t long before she was completely obsessed with this industry and started to take on the manufacturing side of the business! The joy Adele gets from creating our hand-made switches and sockets is lovely to see. From varnishing wooden pattresses to achieve the perfect medium oak finish, to hammering brass and copper to create a stunning, individual look, you can usually find her bopping along to a song while she works, with a smile on her face and happily lost in her own creative world. Just know that when you purchase a light switch or socket from Bromleighs, this is what the process looks like before it arrives at your door. I don’t know about you, but I love the thought of something I own being lovingly handmade and completely individual in its finish.

A Business Built on Character

Fast forward to 2025 and our business has made it through some tough times – Covid, family loss, new family members and a move from Cornwall to South Wales (just to name a few). This year, we’ve set about taking Bromleighs to the next stage. And with that in mind, we added to the family feel: I joined the business. People often ask, do you really want to work with your sister? My answer is always, of course I do – she’s my best friend! How many people are lucky enough to work with their sister every day? Not only that, but it also makes total sense. Adele’s practical and I’m… well, not. She loves the workshop and I love talking to people and running the business side of things – so we make the perfect team, really. At this point, I should probably introduce myself – I’m Lauren, officially ‘Head of Marketing and Strategy.’ Unofficially, everything that isn’t manufacturing a light switch or socket!

What’s Next for Us?

We’ve got some big plans this year and have already kicked off some exciting projects. The new website has been a huge focus lately, but more importantly, we’ve taken time to strip things back and reconnect with what Bromleighs is all about. To put it simply: we’re passionate about the survival of British manufacturing. We love using high-quality, materials to create beautiful products that people cherish. There’s no greater feeling than sending a parcel out and hearing back from a customer who loves the way our pieces complete their space. We especially love seeing our work in lovingly restored period homes, quirky hotels, or even sleek, modern builds – it’s always a thrill.

I don’t think a picture can ever tell you the true quality of something until you’ve felt the weight of it in your hands or run your fingers over the finish.
